How to help the Environment, One Car at a Time.

by Kathy on January 18, 2010

Do you want to reduce your carbon footprint? How would you like to help reduce CO2 emissions by 6.5 billion tons per year?

According to Zipcar, one of the largest car-sharing services in the United States, car sharing has the potential of reducing CO2 emissions by 65 billion tons a year, and that’s just counting its customers from the more than 140 University and colleges across America.

This summer I wrote about going on car sharing, a new way to eliminate the costs and hassles of owning a car while making a positive environmental impact. The idea of a modern car rental service has swept the nation, especially in large metropolitan areas and around college campuses.

With gas prices expected to rise again, now might be a good time to change it up and try car sharing. I-Go, a non-profit car sharing service in Chicago estimates that each I-GO car replaces 17 cars on the road and actually promotes physical activity such as walking.

As a college student, car sharing has come in handy on many occasions. If you know someone who wants to have a car on-campus, you should consider recommending car sharing. Zipcar serves more than one million college students in 25 cities and for a college student who occasionally needs a car, car sharing is the most economical and environmentally friendly way to get around.
