Are your Mirrors in Check?

by Kathy on January 25, 2010

When it comes to being aware of your surroundings on the road, your car’s side view mirrors can be one of your most important assets. Depending on the angle of your mirror, you could be creating dangerous blind spots that can limit what you see on the road.

Poor visibility can decrease your reaction time and put you at a greater risk of getting into an accident. And even if your mirrors are in a fairly accurate position, when it comes time to scan traffic in an emergency situation, small position errors can be dangerous.

Most people incorrectly assume they have their mirrors in the proper position because depending on who you ask, you may hear different answers to how to make your mirrors blind spot-proof.  Some say you should be able to see the side of a car on the inside of the mirror, while others believe your mirrors should be adjusted until you see slightly past the side of a car.

So how do you know if your mirrors are in their optimal position?

Here are 3 easy steps to adjusting your side view mirrors:

1. Adjust the driver’s seat to your normal driving position
2. Lean your head left until it touches your left window. Adjust the left-side mirror until you can barely see your fender
3. Lean your head right until it’s in the center of the rear-view mirror mount. Adjust the right-side mirror until you can barely see your fender.
