December Road Trips

winter roadsRoad trips are often associated with the summertime—driving on an open road with the sun beating down and the wind blowing through your hair. However, if you live in an area with nicer winter weather, December is also a great time to take a road trip and enjoy the unique sights and sounds of winter.

Winter is the ideal time to take a road trip to regions with warmer weather such as California and Nevada because the temperatures drop to between 60 and 80 degrees. It’s also a perfect time to escape the cold to an area with nicer weather while exploring some of America’s natural wonders.

But before you hit the road with your family, here are 5 tips to keep in mind for a safe and exciting winter escape:

1. Check the Weather
Before you decide on a date, check the weather for your departure and arrival city as well as the weather  for the cities you’ll be driving through. You may want to postpone your trip or find an alternative route if you see inclement weather during your trip.

2. Get a Car Check-Up
Winter weather can be grueling for your car. So before you set out on a road trip, get a full-service tune-up at least a week before your trip. Make sure to have you battery tested, your fluids refilled and your headlights and brakes checked.

3. Check those Tires
Inspect your tire-tread wear and tire pressure  to ensure your tires are in shape for the road ahead. You may want to consider installing snow tires if you are driving in an area with frequent snow storms.

4. Prepare Winter Car Kit
In addition to an emergency car kit, you should also prepare an winter car kit with anti-freeze, an ice scraper, a small shovel, salt and extra food and blankets just in case.

5. Drive Cautiously
Because winter road conditions can be particularly dangerous, remember to slow down and don’t use cruise control, especially on slippery roads.
