Can your GPS prevent an Accident?

gpsIf you’ve ever used GPS, you know that it can be a real life-saver sometimes, especially when you’re lost in an area without accurate directions. But now researchers at Ford and Auburn University have found that GPS (global positioning system) may actually serve another purpose.

Virtual reality tests show that GPS satellites can precisely monitor a vehicle’s motion and improve the effectiveness of electronic stability safety control systems.

According to these researchers, there is potential for a GPS satellite to act as an early warning system that can detect when a vehicle is about to lose control and “talk” to a car’s safety controls to prevent a serious accident.

While the research is still in its preliminary stages, the results so far have been promising and hopefully—in the near future—the GPS devices in many cars will be able to do more than give us directions to the nearest gas station.
