The American auto industry is over 100 years old and during this time a lot has happened. From the first Ford Model T in the early 1900’s to the diesel cars that run purely on processed vegetable oil, the American auto industry has come a long way.
With all the focus on driving safety and car care tips here on Vehicle Vibes, I decided that I wanted to learn more about the auto industry, the history of cars and the rich history behind it. During my research, I stumbled upon some pretty interesting facts that I wanted to share.
- In 1916, 55 percent of cars in the world were Model T Fords.
- The first radios were offered in automobiles in 1929.
- In 1938, Buick introduced the first electric turn signals.
- Cars are the most recycled consumer product in the world.
- Auto makers are among the biggest consumers of steel, aluminum, copper, glass, zinc, leather and platinum.
- 60 percent of new cars are purchased annually by women in the United States.
- Every year, the average American commuter spends 38 hours stuck in traffic. That’s up from 14 hours per year in 1982.
- Windshield wipers were introduced by a women named Mary Anderson.
- The Oscar Mayer “wiener mobile” was created in 1936 and manufactured by a Chicago-based General Body Company.
- An oil shortage was the key factor for the implementation of the 55mph national speed limit.
