I recently read an interesting article about using your car for other purposes other than for transportation. This made me think of a blog post on The Kitchn about using your car to dry fruits and vegetables.
Food dehydrators are expensive, especially if you don’t use them very often. Instead, The Kitchn recommends using solar power and your car to make delicious dried fruit and veggies. According to the site, this technique works particularly well if you live in an extremely hot sunny area with a good amount of humidity.
This got me thinking about other non-conventional ways others use their car to prepare food. And, don’t forget to only eat chicken and fish that is fully cooked.
Here is a list of 4 Foods You Can Cook in Your Car:
1. Dried Fruits and Vegetables
Why pay upwards of $8 a pound for dried strawberries or raisins, when one can make them in the car? The above site recommends laying sliced fruits or vegetables on the dashboard of a car and leaving it under the hot sun for a day or two, or until it is dried. Add the dried fruit to your granola for a nutritious breakfast!
2. Engine Roasted Lemon-Herb Chicken
If you plan on driving for about 100 miles or so, the following site says can use the heat from your engine to make yourself some food. Chris Scheller and Chris Maynard’s automotive cookbook, “Manifest Destiny,” suggests securing a piece of chicken or fish, wrapped tightly in aluminum foil, on top of your engine. By the end of your trip, you may have a nice homemade meal
to enjoy.
3. Grilled Salmon
Ben Carter from the blog Wine By Benito, recently documented his attempt to make Salmon en Paillote, which is literally Salmon in parchment paper. His experiment was a success. You can read about it here.
4. Chocolate Chip Cookies
If it ever gets above 100 degrees, some people have tried baking chocolate chip cookies in your car. Nicole Weston of the Baking Bites blog was able to baked 2.5 dozen cookies in about 2.5 hours. While the cookies may not turn golden like they usually do, your car will smell delicious
